Nicole Kidman is still grieving the loss of her parents. In a recent interview with GQ on Nov. 18, the 57-year-old actress opened up about coping with the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, in September. Her father, Dr. Antony Kidman, passed away in 2014.
Reflecting on her emotions, Nicole said, “Life is, whew. It’s definitely a journey… It hits you as you get older.” She described intense moments of grief, adding, “It’s a wake up at 3 a.m. crying and gasping kind of thing. And I’m in it. Fully in it.”
Nicole explained that her feelings on life, death, and loss are particularly vivid now as she raises her two daughters, Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13, with her husband Keith Urban. “Mortality. Connection. Life coming and hitting you,” she shared, acknowledging how the loss of parents and the responsibilities of motherhood and marriage shape her experience of life.
Nicole learned of her mother’s passing just before attending the Venice Film Festival for her movie Babygirl. At the festival, director Halina Reijn read a letter on Nicole’s behalf during the actress’s planned acceptance speech. Nicole had traveled to Venice but soon received the news of her mother’s death.
In a Vanity Fair interview from Nov. 13, Nicole described her mother as her “guiding light.” She fondly recalled how her mother wanted her and her sister to be women who could express themselves and seize opportunities, something her mother never had in her own generation.
Sadly, Janelle Ann Kidman passed before she could see Nicole’s latest work. Reflecting on her mother’s excitement to see Babygirl and Perfect Couple, Nicole said, “I wish she could have seen this part of it.”
At the Los Angeles premiere of Lioness season 2 on Oct. 23, Nicole told The Hollywood Reporter, “I wish my mama was here. Everything is great with work, but I wish my mama was here.
