Two women were tragically shot and killed at a Garland apartment complex on Tuesday morning, and a man now faces a capital murder charge in connection with their deaths, according to police.
Garland officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance shortly after 8 a.m. at an apartment in the 700 block of Broadway Commons. Upon arrival, officers observed that the front door of the residence had been forcibly opened. Inside, they found two small children. As the officers entered the apartment, gunfire suddenly erupted from behind a closed bedroom door. The officers immediately took cover and began issuing commands, prioritizing securing the safety of the children.
According to authorities, 35-year-old Brodrick Earl Kennedy exited the bedroom and surrendered to police. Inside the room, officers discovered two women who had suffered gunshot wounds. One woman, identified as 38-year-old Donillie Lashay Kennedy, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, 58-year-old Shirley Jean Phillips, was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police identified Donillie Kennedy as the wife of Brodrick Kennedy and Shirley Phillips as Donillie’s mother.
As the investigation unfolds, Garland police confirmed that the two children found in the apartment were safely released to extended family members.
Brodrick Kennedy was booked into the Garland Detention Center, facing charges of capital murder of multiple persons and violation of a protective order. As of Tuesday afternoon, authorities reported that no bond had been set for Kennedy. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic shooting.
