The Republican Party is nearing control of the U.S. Congress, having already secured a Senate majority and needing only three more seats to gain the House. With 218 seats required for a majority, Republicans currently hold 214 compared to the Democrats’ 205.
Following his election win, Donald Trump has made key appointments, naming New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and former ICE Acting Director Tom Homan as his “border tsar.” Homan’s role will oversee all aspects of border security, including the Southern and Northern borders, maritime, and aviation security, with a particular focus on deportations.
Republicans are expected to maintain at least 52 seats in the 100-member Senate after winning three previously Democratic-held seats in West Virginia, Ohio, and Montana. Controlling both chambers would significantly boost Trump’s ability to advance his policy agenda, which includes promises to cut taxes, tackle inflation, and address illegal immigration.
Trump has already tapped Susie Wiles as his chief of staff, praising her composure and low-profile approach. Other potential cabinet members could include high-profile figures like Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who both supported Trump during the campaign. Trump also confirmed that former officials Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo would not have roles in his new administration.
As Trump continues to shape his team, attention remains on the final House seats needed to secure full congressional control.
