Gus Malzahn leaves UCF to become Florida State offensive coordinator.

Gus Malzahn’s tenure as UCF head coach has ended after four seasons in Orlando. ESPN reports Malzahn will transition to Florida State as offensive coordinator.

His final game with UCF was a 28-14 loss to Utah, concluding a challenging 4-8 season. The school issued a statement expressing gratitude for his contributions, including guiding the program through its Big 12 transition.

Malzahn departs UCF with a 28-24 record, though recent seasons fell short of expectations. Previously, he led Auburn to an SEC championship and BCS title game in 2013 before his dismissal in 2020.

At Florida State, Malzahn replaces Alex Atkins, fired after the Seminoles’ offensive struggles this season, averaging just 15.8 points per game. Florida State, now 2-9, has sharply declined from its 13-1 ACC championship season in 2022.

UCF struggled in 2023, facing quarterback instability with four players taking snaps, resulting in a 2-7 conference record. Meanwhile, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has also dismissed defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and receivers coach Ron Dugans during this disappointing campaign.
