Eagles tighten NFC East lead with 26-18 Thursday victory over Commanders

The Eagles scored 23 straight points in the second half Thursday night before Commanders tight end Zach Ertz secured a late touchdown and two-point conversion against his former team. Philadelphia emerged with a 26-18 victory despite Jake Elliott missing three kicks.

With their sixth win in a row, the Eagles (8-2) now lead the NFC East by 1.5 games over the Commanders (7-4). The teams are set to face off again on December 22.

Philadelphia dominated the Commanders with 434 total yards to 264, including 228 rushing yards. Elliott missed field goals from 44 and 51 yards and an extra point, all wide left, but did convert a 31-yarder.

Jalen Hurts’ 1-yard touchdown run gave the Eagles their first lead at 12-10 with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, playing through a rib injury, struggled under pressure. His interception, picked off by safety Reed Blankenship, led to two quick Saquon Barkley touchdowns in just 20 seconds in the fourth quarter. Barkley’s 23-yard touchdown with 4:58 remaining sealed the win, while his 39-yard run moments later added an exclamation point.

Barkley, who had 56 yards in the first half, finished the game with 146 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, along with two catches for 52 yards. Hurts went 18-for-28 with 221 passing yards and added 40 yards on nine carries.

The Commanders had a chance to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but after failing to convert on two short runs, they opted to go for it on fourth down instead of a go-ahead field goal. Daniels was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-2 by Zack Baun and Blankenship, preserving the Eagles’ lead.

Over their six-game winning streak, the Eagles’ defense has only allowed six touchdowns. Ertz’s late touchdown came with just 28 seconds left, as the Commanders took 4:10 on a 15-play, 70-yard drive. They had a shot at an onside kick, but Dallas Goedert secured it for the Eagles.

Daniels finished 22-of-32 for 191 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Running back Austin Ekeler had eight catches for 89 yards, as the Eagles’ defense shut down Washington’s receivers, holding Terry McLaurin to one catch for 10 yards late in the game.
