De Rossi reveals surprising Roma choices and praises Totti

Daniele De Rossi discussed his surprising Roma lineup choices for the match against Genoa and addressed Francesco Totti’s controversial remarks, expressing his deep admiration for Totti. The match kicks off at Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Marassi) at 11:30 UK time (10:30 GMT).

Despite speculation that Mario Hermoso would make his debut start after joining as a free agent, De Rossi has opted for a tactical shift. Angelino is moved into the back three, with Alexis Saelemaekers and Stephan El Shaarawy as wing-backs.

“Honestly, Hermoso is ready to play, but with the new stadium and league, I wanted to give him some time. We’ve used this defense before and I’m more confident starting him at home, but he will come off the bench today,” De Rossi told DAZN.

Known for his flexibility, De Rossi has chosen a 3-5-2 formation today to match Alberto Gilardino’s Genoa, who employ a similar tactical approach. “Statistics show Genoa allows play in their half, but you mustn’t lose possession as they are very direct and attacking. I prefer playing with three at the back and attacking wing-backs, though we can adjust based on the opponent’s characteristics.”

El Shaarawy, who struggled earlier in the season, has recently improved significantly, earning his place in the lineup.

Roma fans were stirred by Totti’s recent comments, where he suggested his presence might be seen as burdensome for the club and implied that De Rossi often took the brunt of criticism.

“Francesco’s comments always make headlines, especially in Rome. When he speaks, everyone listens,” De Rossi said. “We need to focus on the game. He mentioned he’d give an arm for me, and I feel the same about him.
