NEW YORK — Floodwaters began rising in Howard Beach, Queens early Friday afternoon as New York City braced for more coastal flooding.
Emergency management officials warned that flooding could spread to other parts of the city, including the Bronx. “Tides are starting to recede here, but they are expected to rise in the Bronx within a few hours,” the Office of Emergency Management posted on social media Friday morning. Although no major impacts have been reported, the city’s Coastal Flooding Travel Advisory remains in effect as high tide continues.
A coastal flood warning is in place for moderate flooding in Queens, the Bronx, Fairfield, Nassau, and Westchester counties until Saturday evening. Other areas in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are under a coastal flood advisory for minor flooding.
City officials say this week’s full moon has contributed to the unusually high tides.
Looking ahead, a coastal flood watch takes effect Saturday, with moderate flooding expected in Queens, Long Island, and along the Jersey Shore. Additionally, dangerous rip currents are expected at New York and New Jersey beaches.
