Baseball legend Wade Boggs reveals he is fighting prostate cancer

Throughout his 18-year Major League Baseball career, Wade Boggs faced countless pitchers, yet his most formidable opponent is now a personal one: prostate cancer.

The 12-time All-Star and World Series champion made his diagnosis public on Saturday. In a heartfelt message posted on X, accompanied by an image of a prostate cancer guide, Boggs, 66, shared his battle with the disease. “I’ve never been a goal-oriented person, but with the strength and support of my family and my faith in God, I’m going to ring that damn bell,” he wrote, reflecting his determination to overcome this challenge.

Boggs’ illustrious career saw him play 2,439 games with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Known for his exceptional hitting prowess, he was a five-time batting champion with the Red Sox and garnered American League MVP votes nine times. His most memorable years were with the Red Sox, but he finally secured his long-awaited World Series ring with the Yankees in 1996.

During the 1996 season, Boggs batted .311 and scored 80 runs. This year marked his final All-Star appearance, capping off a remarkable career with one of baseball’s most storied franchises. In the World Series, Boggs contributed significantly, hitting .273 with three hits and two RBIs across 11 at-bats. The Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves in six games, signaling the start of a new era of dominance for the team.

Boggs ended his career with the Devil Rays, adding to his impressive list of achievements. He joined the exclusive 3,000-hit club and finished with a total of 3,010 hits. His career statistics also include 118 home runs and a .328 batting average.

Despite his remarkable on-field accomplishments, Boggs now faces a different kind of fight. His battle with prostate cancer is a deeply personal struggle, but he approaches it with the same resilience and resolve that characterized his baseball career.
