A 15-year-old Australian boy spent his entire savings to attend the final league derby at Goodison Park, only for the match to be postponed just four hours before kick-off.
Mackenzie Kinsella, an Everton fan from Sydney, had convinced his Liverpool-born mother, Rita, to let him travel for the historic event. Speaking to Radio Merseyside, Rita shared: “He told me it was his dream to see an Everton v Liverpool game at Goodison Park. At first, I said: ‘No chance, we just returned from England, and I can’t save up in time.’”
Determined, Mackenzie saved up all his money and approached his mom two weeks before the derby. “I’d really like to go, Mum. Will you let me?” he asked. Proud of his dedication, Rita finally agreed. “We’re very proud of him,” she added.
While in England, Mackenzie stayed with his aunt and attended Everton’s 4-0 victory against Wolves on Wednesday. But his hopes of witnessing the 245th Merseyside derby were dashed Saturday morning when the match was postponed due to Storm Darragh’s impact.
The game was to be the final league derby at Goodison Park after 130 years, as Everton prepares to relocate to Bramley-Moore Dock next season.
